The simple color palette of red, black and white is the strength of this image. The viewer is drawn first to the young woman. Everything we can see of her body is a variation on a red hue. The nail polish color is the most saturated, followed by her hair, lips, cheeks and finally the pale pink of the rest of her skin. The color of the leather couch is a further variation of red. The black hood frames her head nicely but I would have liked to see the beautiful red hair displayed against the white wall. Two faces are visible on her shirt, one of them a visual echo of her profile. She is intent on what she is doing which makes the viewer a voyeur or an interruption. This image could be placed in two of Barrett’s categories. The viewer is allowed to contemplate the beauty of a young woman which would place it in Barrett’s aesthetically evaluative category. It is also an environmental portrait which could place it in his explanatory category.
